Not for digital photographersAug 21, 2010 I had never used Photoshop before so I thought this would be the best place to start. And I did learn a lot about Photoshop from this book and it is a great book for the novice. But as a photographer, the 'candy' came on page 354 (of 750!): "Camera Raw ... is hands down the easiest place to fix your images". This is a plug-in that comes standard with Photoshop but is a stand-alone program. Pages 354 - 362 cover the basics of Camera Raw and the section ends with referring the reader who wants to know more to other books. After reading this section I can already see I will be doing most of my work in Camera Raw and only opening Photoshop itself for some fine-tune work on some of my photo's. So 8 pages dedicated to the area where I will be spending 90% of my time leaves me a little unsatisfied.
If you know nothing of Photoshop and want to make your own pictures, do web design, etc. then this is a great book to teach you this fantastic program but for photographers who don't care a lot about drawing or adding text, I would not recommend this book. Instead look for something specifically written for photographers that includes a discussion of Camera Raw.
It would have been nice if I had known this book only covers the program Photoshop, one of a suite of programs sold as Photoshop.
AwesomeJun 28, 2010 Really great information, logically set out and easy to follow with plenty of screenshots. Love it!
Great for a beginnerJun 27, 2010 I have a number of Photoshop books that I purchased in order to get started learning the program. I am a computer professional but new to Photoshop. The Kelby books are great for applying Photoshop to specific photo procesing issues. This book is great for learning the basics of all of the things that Photoshop will do. I am only in chapter 2 but I am enjoying the style and the progression of learning. I would recommend it so far.

very clear and preciseMay 31, 2010 Review by Thorsten-Vancouver InDesign User Group.
This book starts with a great introduction "Congratulations on buying one of the most complicated pieces of software ever created", and goes on in explaining what is new in this version of Photoshop. For me as Photographer it is also great to have my own introduction on what I should be aware of in this book. Great!
After that it is easing in into what photoshop is all about and how it is set up, the panels, the tools, preferences and so much more. Everything is very easy explained and images make it even easier to understand. I like that it feels like a beginner and a professional could read this at the same time. From there it goes more into detail about layers, selections, channels, editing images, combining images, color and my favorite the beauty shop. After that there is more about the artistic side of photoshop what does not make it harder to understand, but even more interesting. Especially creating your own art, in a way.
The printing and the web is not so interesting for me and it seemed to be too much to read at this time. But as a photographer this is very important. They should have included more about color profiles and how to use them and set them up with different printers, but I think it is a good start. The whole ends with a big bang and to create an easier work flow with actions. Actions are very important if you shoot a lot and need to do some easy tweaking, sizing, cropping, ... So it is a great way to end this book with that as well as the plug ins mentioned in the last chapter.
All together it is a nice book, easy to read and easy to understand. The notes and tips all around are good too, they help you to not just see the example that is mentioned in the book, but go beyond that. Sometimes it feels like too much text, but that is necessary to make it very clear and precise. Fun Fun Fun!!!
